'UndocuQueer Billboard' Explores Intersection of LGBTQ and Undocumented Communities Galeria de la Raza
go to original June 22, 2013

Thanks to Galería de la Raza for making this happen, peace to everyone who participated in the creation of this billboard, and all supporters! (dreamersadrift)

Galería de la Raza is pleased to present the newest installment of the Digital Mural Project in honor of Pride during the month of June.

Artist and activist Julio Salgado is the co-founder of DreamersAdrift.com. His status as an undocumented, queer artivist has fueled the contents of his illustrations, which depict key individuals and moments of the current fight for migrant rights in the United States. Salgado graduated from California State Universitiy, Long Beach with a degree in journalism.

The I Am UndocuQueer! billboard is a collaboration between Salgado and the many fearless undocumented and queer activists and organizers across the country. The main objective of this billboard is to call attention to the intersectionality of the immigrant and LGBTQ communities. Says Salgado, "Within the immigrant community, we must acknowledge that our queer voices should not be left out of the immigration debate, and we cannot let politicians tell us otherwise. Likewise, the LGBTQ community must be aware that being queer goes beyond marriage and trying to join the military. Let's continue the dialogue and keep intersecting our communities and struggles."
