It has been four years since the horrifying fire in the ABC Childcare Center in Hermosillo, Sonora, which took place in June, 2009 and ended the lives of 49 children and left another 104 with serious injuries in one of the most painful public tragedies in Mexico's recent history.

A fire broke out in a storage room in the State Treasury building and quickly spread next door onto the roof of the nursery that was made of a highly flammable and toxic material. Mothers and parents rushed to the kindergarten to a nightmarish scene and tried to find their children in what can only be described as the worst kind of desperation a parent could have.

Despite being immersed in a drug war that leaves thousands of casualties each year, the ABC tragedy struck a different chord among Mexicans due to the nature of the accident and the innocent lives it claimed. After the fire, most Mexicans extended their solidarity with the parents of the children who were lost and injured as they went through a long journey trying to find justice and a sense of peace to console their irreparable loss.

Once the initial trauma and horror subsided, some inconvenient truths began to emerge from the ashes of the burned-down daycare center.
