On World No Tobacco Day 2013, British American Tobacco asks: "What would a world with no legal tobacco industry really look like?" (WelcomeToBAT)
Within the framework of the World No-Tobacco Day in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, the Temazcalli Institute carried out the campaign "Exchange it for an apple" as part of its actions to prevent the use of toxic substances.
The organisation declared that tobacco consumption is the main preventable cause of death and currently kills one in every ten people in the world.
Other statistics reveal that the largest percentage of active smokers lies within the 12-17 year old range.
They also reveal that 40% of Mexicans have heard of or seen free telephone numbers that provide help to quit smoking.
The goal of the campaign was to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco smoking and to promote healthy lifestyles.
The campaign took place on 31 May in partnership with several other institutions and the citizens themselves. Exchange points were set up in 58 municipalities, where smokers were invited to exchange their cigarettes for apples, explaining them the dangers of smoking.
At the end of the day, all cigarettes collected were destroyed.
