As he led the ceremony commemorating Polytechnic Day, during which the Lázaro Cárdenas Award was presented to 15 prominent members of the Polytechnic community, President Enrique Peña Nieto said that, “More science and more technology are conditions that will allow Mexico to establish itself as an emerging power in the coming years.”
At the event, which also marked the 77th anniversary of the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), President Peña Nieto said that more science and more technology are the keys to opening the doors of productivity, and thereby achieving better incomes for all Mexicans.
“If we are able to create synergy to substantially increase public and private investment in research and development, Mexico will walk more confidently towards the path of prosperity, which is one of the five major national goals this administration has set,” he added.
After repeating the government’s firm commitment to promoting science, technology and innovation, the President recalled that the National Development Plan 2013-2018, released today, identifies five strategies to help strengthen the country’s scientific and technological infrastructure:
First - Contribute to ensuring that national investment in scientific research and technological development grows annually and achieves a level of one percent of GDP. “The families of citizens can have better incomes by becoming a more productive country that can generate greater wealth, which is why we must devote more efforts to innovation, science and technology,” he added.
Second - Contribute to the training and strengthening of high-level human capital.
Third - Promote the development of vocations and scientific, technological and local innovation capacities to strengthen sustainable, inclusive regional development.
“The point is not only to be more productive and have greater development in certain parts of the country. The point is to trigger our potential by acknowledging the regional vocations and strengths of our country, and realizing that through targeted, specific, particular policies, we will be able to channel each of these strengths,” he said.
Fourth – Contribute to the transfer and use of knowledge by linking higher education institutions to research centers, and the public, social and private sectors.
Fifth - Contribute to the strengthening of the country’s scientific and technological infrastructure.
