MEXICO CITY - President Enrique Peña Nieto named Alfredo Castillo Cervantes to be the new head of Mexico's consumer protection agency.

Castillo Cervantes on Tuesday took over direction of the agency, known as Profeco, at a ceremony presided over by Economy Secretary Ildefonso Guajardo Villarreal.

The appointment comes almost a week after the president ordered the sacking of erstwhile Profeco chief Humberto Benitez over a scandal unleashed by his daughter that had affected the image and prestige of the agency.

The incident occurred on April 26 when Andrea Benitez was denied a table in a restaurant because it had already been reserved by other guests.

After several threats by the young woman, Profeco officials arrived on the scene to paste up stickers saying the restaurant's activities were suspended, to the surprise of both the owners and diners.

Castillo Cervantes has served as senior prosecutor in the Mexican Attorney General's Office since December 2012.

Profeco is an institution created in 1976 to promote and protect consumers' rights in Mexico, as well as to foster intelligent consumption and the equity and legal security between suppliers and consumers.
