UPDATE: Tropical Depression 1-E was upgraded to Tropical Storm Alvin late Wednesday, the first named storm of the Pacific hurricane season, weather officials said. It had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph, gusting higher and could develop into a hurricane within a day or two. No coastal warnings were issued.
The 2013 Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season, which began today (May 15), started right on cue with the development of the first tropical depression of the season.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported at 8 a.m. PDT Wednesday that the tropical depression with 35 mph winds had formed off the coast of Mexico, about 650 miles southwest of Acapulco.
The tropical depression is said to be no threat to land as it moves off to the west at 12 mph and eventually west northwest over the next several days, according to the NHC.
It is expected to strengthen further and become the first named storm, Alvin, of the season by Wednesday evening and the first hurricane by late on Thursday.
The Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season runs from May 15 through Nov. 30.
Typically during an average season, 15 named storms form with four of those becoming major hurricanes of at least category three strength with top sustained winds of 111 mph.
The 2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season begins in 16 days on June 1.
