MEXICO CITY - Mexico's unemployment rate fell in March from a year earlier, but was up from February in seasonally adjusted terms as formal private-sector employment slowed.

The National Statistics Institute, or Inegi, said the unemployment rate stood at 4.5% last month, compared with 4.6% in March of 2012. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose 0.27 percentage point from February, however, to 5% in March.

Unemployment in the country's 32 largest cities fell to 5.2% from 5.4% a year ago, and was also below February's level in seasonally adjusted terms.

The Labor Ministry reported earlier this week that around 54,000 formal private-sector jobs were added in March, according to the number of people registered for health and other services with the Mexican Social Security Institute.
