Sergio Haro spoke to RNW while visiting The Hague. (RNW)

Sergio Haro is a reporter for the Zeta weekly in northern Mexico. He’s been working as a journalist for the past two decades in a country where 172 reporters have been murdered in the past 12 years. Among them was Benjamín Flores who, together with Haro and three other journalists, set up a daily in northern Mexico in 1997. A few months later Flores was shot dead.

Many other reporters have been silenced. Despite these frightening statistics, Haro refuses to stop reporting on the country’s main problem: the drugs trade.

His story was featured in the documentary “Reportero”, which was screened at the recent Dutch film festival, Movies that Matter.
