For Roy (Daniela Rea)

Every time she takes the needle and inserts it into the white handkerchief, that she pulls the thread and completes the stitch, Leticia Hidalgo says she feels as if it might caress her son Roy. One and another stitch, one after another in green thread for her son, to kiss him, hug him at a distance. To keep the hope that someday he will appear.

Every Thursday and Sunday in different plazas of the country, the same in Monterrey as in Guadalajara and in Coyoacán in Mexico City, sometimes even in Argentina and Spain, Leticia and other mothers of the disappeared, their friends and unknown supporters embroider the names and the stories of those who are not here today. They stitch in order not to forget. They embroider while they chat, while they comfort each other, while they plan their search strategy.

Rosendo Torres Cortés, Federal Police, 32 years. He disappeared on July 10, 2011, in Ciudad Lerdo, Durango. Your family loves you and misses you, we miss you. Come back soon. God bless you.

They embroider in red thread for those who were killed and with green thread for those who disappeared. They embroider names, flowers, hearts. They do it unified in the collective Embroidering for Peace that arose in the Plaza of Coyoacan in 2011 on the initiative of another group, Fuentes Rojas, which colored the fountains of the Federal District with red ink to denounce the bloodshed during the war against organized crime initiated by the government of Felipe Calderón (2006-2012).
