Two women have been legally wed in the Mexican state of Oaxaca in the first legal same-sex marriage to occur in the state.

LGBT rights group the Oaxaca Front for the Respect and Recognition of Sexual Diversity announced on Thursday that the two unnamed women had married on March 22 in a private ceremony.

The women were one of three couples that had challenged the state’s ban on same-sex marriage in the Mexican Supreme Court last year.

The decision is expected to pave the way to bans on same-sex marriage being lifted in other Mexican states, while the Supreme Court had already ruled that same-sex marriages conducted in Mexico City must be legally recognized elsewhere in the country.

Until now Mexico City has been the only Mexican jurisdiction to perform same-sex marriages.

Same-sex couples were only recognized as co-beneficiaries for social security benefits in Mexico as recently as last year.
