On May 4, 2006, two protestors died and 145 were brutally and arbitrarily arrested when several thousand state and federal police invaded the town. At least 27 women suffered rape and sexual torture in detention. Until this day, the women of Atenco have been denied justice as the perpetrators enjoy impunity. (atencofpdt.blogspot.mx)
PRD (Party of the Democratic Revolution) Deputies agreed that the "friendly settlement" proposed by the federal government to women victims of the insult and violence at San Salvador Atenco is unacceptable. It shows that the "authority is blind and deaf", and an apology in no way corrects the aggression suffered by the victims. If President Enrique Peña Nieto seeks to transform the country, it is his obligation to push for punishment of those physically responsible and the masterminds.
Separately, the Citizens Movement party stated that the "apology" that the federal government offered to the women of San Salvador Atenco who were victims of sexual torture in May of 2006 is not enough. Martha Tagle, secretary of Sectoral Organizations of the political institute, said that one way to deliver justice is to apprehend those responsible for the crimes, including the authorities who ordered the operation in Atenco.
PRD Deputy María del Socorro Ceseñas Chapa said a public or private apology does not overcome the demand of the abused women.
