MEXICO CITY – A new migration dynamic has emerged in Central America and Mexico.

Mexico, traditionally a country of migrants, is becoming a nation of transit and destination for those in search of a better life.

Extortion of migrants by drug cartels has made trying to cross the U.S. border ever riskier. Stricter border controls also encourage those fleeing violence in Mexico’s northern states and Central American countries to stay in Mexico.

It has become time for the “Mexican dream,” nurtured by Mexicans and Central Americans who seek alternatives in Mexico’s safer cities.

Between 2006 and 2011, more than 70,000 people died due to organized crime and cartel violence in Mexico. In 2011, 1,650 companies moved their headquarters from northern states – the most affected by violence – to Mexico City, according to the city government.

Many families followed suit. In August of last year, the government found that 40,000 houses had been abandoned in Ciudad Juárez, the country’s most violent city and the second most violent in the world, according to the Mexican civil organization Citizens’ Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice.

Many Mexican families moved to safer parts of the country, such as the cities of Querétaro, Mérida and Oaxaca.
