Capella Pedregal sits on the southernmost tip of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula. Encompassing 24 spectacular mountainside and oceanfront acres, the luxury resort rests at the very point where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez, near the legendary rock formations known as Land's End. As hotel arrivals go, the one at Capella Pedregal is pretty spectacular. About 45 minutes from the Los Cabos airport, you reach a tunnel that cuts 300 meters through a mountain. On the far side is the grand entrance to a Mexican beach resort - outsize adobe buildings, star-shaped glass lanterns, reflecting pools, and torches - and behind it, in the Pacific, humpback whales breaching as if as on cue.
That tunnel, it turns out, plays a major role in differentiating Capella Pedregal, which opened about four years ago, from its long-established competitors like Las Ventanas al Paraiso and the One & Only Palmilla. It came about at the suggestion of the developer’s young grandson, who recommended it when Granddad didn’t know how to access the spectacular stretch of coastline he owned.
Turning a ten-year-old’s fantasy into reality took three years, eight months, and lots of dynamite, but the upshot is that the resort has a fantastic best-of-both-worlds location: splendidly isolated, but ten minutes’ walk from the clubs and restaurants of Cabo San Lucas.
