MEXICO CITY – President Enrique Peña Nieto said this week that during the next decade science, technology and innovation investment will equal 1.2 percent of gross domestic product.
After swearing in Enrique Cabrero Mendoza as the new director of the National Council of Science and Technology (Conacyt), Peña Nieto said that his administration aims to contribute 1 percent of GDP to the sciences, with a special focus on innovation.
The president said that 70.39 billion pesos ($5.49 billion) has been allocated to science and technology in next year’s budget. Peña Nieto discussed five key goals for the new Conacyt director.
The first is a collaboration with the Treasury and Public Finance Secretariat (SHCP) and the Economy Secretariat (SE), to design “a roadmap that allows us to know what is needed, compiling information from academics and the community to ensure that investment (in the sciences) is tripled over the next ten years,” the president said.
Secondly, he continued, is the creation of regional and state-based public policies focused on the unique economic and development conditions of each state.
A third goal is assisting Mexico’s researchers, Peña Nieto said, not only making researchers’ work more prominent but also providing more support for those in the field.
A science, technology and innovation system must be established, the president said, in collaboration with the SE and Public Education Secretariat (SEP), and finally, the Conacyt must improve ties between the business and academic sectors.
