Governor Roberto Borge Angulo said this week that 900 tons of recyclables have been collected thanks to 47 families from the municipalities of Othón P. Blanco, Bacalar, José María Morelos and Felipe Carrillo Puerto who participated in the Food for Trash program.

“We have removed more than 900 tons of recyclable trash from streets, patios and homes … (litter) is a health risk, (causing) gastrointestinal and respiratory fungal problems,” Borge Angulo said, adding that clean-up efforts reduce the risk of dengue, diarrhea and fungal infections.

The Trash for Food program, spearheaded by the governor, puts mobile recycling centers in neighborhoods where residents can take their recyclables to exchange for basic food items.

The governor said that good waste management eliminates communicable diseases and preserves the environment.

“(My administration) has created programs that directly benefit residents. With these programs we have improved the capital’s image,” Borge Angulo said.

The governor said that he is committed to working with and listening to the public, “as we have been doing every day.” He made special mention to the Quintana Roo Green 2011-2016 Plan.

Trash for Food Program Coordinator Israel Hernández Radilla said that social programs are crucial for maintaining the state’s image and promoting Quintana Roo as a tourist destination.

Hernández Radilla noted that in only 120 days, 24 parks and 20 athletics fields have been cleaned up, including the Nachan Ka’an, Nachan Ka´an, 20 de Noviembre, 10 de Abril and Erick Paolo Martínez baseball fields, the Chetumal Technological Institute’s recreational facilities, the Ocho de Octubre soccer field and Quintana Roo’s ecological park.

The communities of Sergio Butrón, Carlos A. Madrazo, Sacxán, Ramonal, El Palmar, Allende, Kuchumatán, Chunhuhub and Dziuché benefited from clean up efforts in the municipalities of Othón P. Blanco, Bacalar, Felipe Carrillo Puerto and José María Morelos.
