Yucatan is the only state in Mexico where no known drug cartel has “dominant presence”, says a recent study by the Drug Enforcement Administration of the United States (DEA).
In all other states, including Quintana Roo and Campeche, one or more criminal organizations control the drug trade, reports the study dated on January and delivered to Central 9 by Elias Razur Antonio, a researcher at the Autonomous Metropolitan University and director of Mexican Drug Monitoring.
The article published by Diario de Yucatan on December 26th states that the document does not explain why Yucatán is not under the control of a drug trafficking organization, as in the rest of the country. “Neither do I understand it,” says Razur Antonio, “but the fact is striking.”
According to the DEA report, submitted in November to the National Security Committee of the House of Representatives of the United States, and obtained by Razur, in the first nine months of 2011 there were 16.414 murders nationwide drug-traffic related. Of these, only two occurred in Yucatan.
“This may explain something,” says the researcher.
In the same period, in Quintana Roo occurred 65 murders and in Campeche, 10. The states with the highest rates were Chihuahua with 2.925 murders, Guerrero with 1.813, Nuevo Leon with 1.472 and Tamaulipas 1.257.
