The program between Mexico and Canada, aimed to train and educate the judges in the oral system that began two years ago concluded last week. This was taken by 100 judges from the states of Yucatan, Tabasco, Campeche, Chiapas and Quintana Roo, having as a host of the lectures the State of Yucatan.

The courses organized by the Canadian Embassy and the National Judicial Institute of Canada with the support of the Coordination Council for the Implementation of the Criminal Justice System (SETEC), has had its regional headquarters in Merida, where over 100 judges from across the southwest region of Mexico have been trained by Canadian experts in the oral accusatory system.

At the opening of the last four-day course, the Judge of the Court of Justice of Ontario and also executive director of the National Judicial Institute of Canada, Brian Lennox opened the lectures.

“We are surprised by the level of commitment of the judiciaries of the region to advance in this reform,” explained Judge Lennox.

Patricia Dunberry, Attorney and Director of International Programs from the Department of Justice of Canada also highlighted the success of this training program, and thanked the judicial power of Yucatan for its performance and collaboration in this event.

The President of the Superior Court of Justice of Yucatán and the Judicial Council, Marcos Alejandro Celis Quintal pointed out that the changes in the justice system that was initiated recently in Yucatan requires continued training for its implementation to be successful.

“A service of justice requires constant training, and we have trained to be at the highest levels as requirde by the new system to meet the demands of society. Canada has a strong system that allows us to receive assistance and training in technical methods to master these new justice reforms, litigation and investigation techniques against crime.”

Celis Quintal thanked the SETEC, the Canadian Embassy and the National Judicial Institute of Canada for the training given to provide the tools to allow judges to play their role in the new oral accusatory system.
