MEXICO CITY – Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) Deputy María Leticia Mendoza Curiel said this week that the price of food has increased more than 100 percent over the last six years, adding that it is necessary to implement a national strategy geared toward curbing rising prices and ensuring that families are not affected at the beginning of the year by the so-called January slump.
The PRI deputy called on the president and the secretariats of treasury and public finance and the tax administration to quickly create a national strategy to halt rising prices on basic food items.
Mendoza Curiel said that the government must guarantee the population’s access to food, as established by Article 4 of the Mexican Constitution, and has failed to do after the price increases.
She went on to say that since August 2006, the price of corn, beans and rice went up by between 65 and 100 percent.
The price of other legumes such as lentils increased by between 115 and 119 percent, while the average minimum wage only increased 28.59 percent in the same period.
Mendoza Curiel said that in 2012 it takes three times as much money to buy the same amount of food that a family could purchase in 1970, reflecting consumers’ diminishing buying power.
