MEXICO CITY — Mexico City on Wednesday installed a new mayor who vowed to promote social programs and security in the capital of Mexico.
“We will convert Mexico City into the social capital, respectful of human rights,” Miguel Angel Mancera said at a ceremony before the city’s legislature.
A fitness buff, Mancera promised to promote sports facilities and recreational centers, and to enhance health care programs and education reform.
The leader of Mexico’s largest metropolis said he will also boost free Internet access to build a “digital and information city” and continue to train police and public security personnel to make the city safer.
Mancera, a former attorney general of the city, is the fourth elected mayor of Mexico City. The post used to be appointed by the president.
