MÉRIDA, Yucatán - During a working tour of the state, President Calderón announced a key achievement: the laying of the three millionth concrete floor.
At the beginning of this administration, there was concern that many families in the country were still living in houses with dirt floors. According to the 2005 Population and Housing Census, there were 2.45 million households in this condition.
The president declared that having dirt floors is one of the most painful expressions of poverty and one of the social lags that hurt us most as a society, which is why his administration focused on creating a program to improve the housing conditions of those with least.
The goal for this administration was to replace dirt floors with concrete floors in 2.45 million households. Today, it has not only achieved this goal but actually exceeded it by over 20 per cent. Over the past six years, three million concrete floors have been laid in the dwellings of the Mexicans with least. This is a social achievement of the first order in the country, since it means better quality of living for millions of Mexicans.
The greatest effort has been made in the most isolated rural and indigenous communities in the country in order to provide them with decent housing and improve the quality of life of households and communities in the greatest need so that children will grow up in healthier conditions and families will increase their assets.
Actions such as these prove that the current administration is a congruent government that works for the benefit of the poor, as borne out by tangible actions, such as the construction of concrete floors, assistance for education, health and food and “the delivery of the Opportunities Program in households in Mexico with the least resources.”
