Hundreds of families participated in the Trash for Food program in Cancun on Sunday, in which they exchanged nearly 25 metric tons of trash for basic food and health products.
Governor Roberto Borge Angulo personally greeted the more than 600 families who came out to exchange recyclable materials, such as paper, cardboard and glass, for beans, eggs, fruit, vegetables, powered milk and tooth paste.
The governor said that by participating in the program, families are contributing to a more healthy state, keeping their homes clean and reducing the amount of areas where mosquitoes can breed and transmit dengue.
At the event, the state government also provided citizens with medical treatment, haircuts, manicures and workshops to increase environmental awareness.
