Last week in Mexico City, President Calderón led the “A Morning for Health” event, during which he inaugurated the new installations of the National Genomic Medicine Institute, the Outpatients’ Institute and the Radio-Oncological Unit at the Salvador Zubirán National Unit of Medical Sciences and Nutrition. Later on, he supervised the extension to the National Institute of Cancerology.
The new installations at the National Institute of Genomic Medicine (INMEGEN) place Mexico at the forefront of scientific research in medicine and will assist members of this medical community in their scientific work. The new installations at the Institute will house 18 scientific research laboratories, six high technology units, proteomic sequencing and identification unit, a biomarker validation unit, a genomic diagnostic unit laboratory, and a congress unit comprising one auditorium with a capacity for 500 persons, 2 auditoriums for 150 persons and classrooms.
Over 1.5 billion pesos were invested in the construction and equipment of the new INMEGEN installations. The advance of genomic medicine is essential to the wellbeing and progress of society and its development and its development will be crucial to making more accurate medical diagnoses, combating disorders and preventing the common diseases suffered by Mexicans. This applied science will achieve savings in health care costs and play a key role in equaling Mexicans’ opportunities to lead healthy lives.
Later on, the president supervised the extension to the National Institute of Cancerology. He visited the new Integral Breast Cancer Clinic, a strategic center that will help overcome this disease, the leading cause of death among Mexican women. The clinic required a total investment of 1.2 billion pesos.
Lastly, he inaugurated the Outpatient Unit and the Radio-Oncological Unit, located in the Salvador Zubirán National Nutrition Institute. Nearly 600 million pesos were invested in this unit.
During this administration, efforts have been made to create and reinforce the health institutions Mexico needs to cope with the health challenges of the 21st century. In January 2011, the National Burn Research and Treatment Center was inaugurated. This center, the first of its kind in America, forms part of the National Institute of Rehabilitation. The Unit of Biopsychosocial Research in Addictions was opened earlier this month at the National Institute of Psychiatry to create vaccinations against the main drugs affecting Mexicans.
The president remarked that thanks to the work of Mexican doctors, researchers and nurses, universal health coverage was achieved, constituting a milestone in the history of the country. To this end, programs were established such as Medical Insurance for a New Generation, the Healthy Pregnancy Strategy and the Popular Insurance Scheme.
