MEXICO CITY – Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) Senate Coordinator Emilio Gamboa Patrón said that Enrique Peña Nieto is “not afraid” of entering the Chamber of Deputies this week to be sworn in as Mexico’s next president.
Gamboa Patrón, who is also president of the Political Organization Board (Jucopo), said that he did not think the left would disrupt the ceremony in the same way they did six years ago at Felipe Calderón’s swearing-in.
“There is no fear on the part of President-elect Peña Nieto. Over the past month and a half he made his decision clear: to do what the Constitution asks of him, and the first mandate required of the president-elect is to go to the Congress (to be sworn in).”
The Chamber of Deputies yesterday outlined the format for Peña Nieto’s swearing-in ceremony. It was agreed that Congress would meet at 9 a.m. with a role call and quorum statement. Afterwards, there will be a reading of the Sept. 4 announcement in the Official Gazette of Peña Nieto officially winning the July 1 presidential election and the first paragraph of Article 87 of the Constitution.
Delegations will then be designated to accompany Felipe Calderón and Peña Nieto throughout the proceedings. Then, in order of importance, one legislator from each of the seven parties will speak for 10 minutes.
