Retail sales in Mexico continued on an upward path in September, rising from a year earlier and from August in seasonally adjusted terms, the National Statistics Institute, or Inegi, said Wednesday.
Inegi said retail sales rose 3.8% from September of 2011, led by increased purchases of clothing and footwear, and sales in department stores and hypermarkets. Sales of cars and auto parts also rose, while sales of food and beverages, domestic appliances, and computers fell.
The increase was below the average of 4.5% for the first nine months of the year, and below the 4.2% median estimate of 10 economists polled by Dow Jones.
Retail sales rose 1% from August in seasonally adjusted terms.
Sales at the wholesale level, meanwhile, fell 3.3% from September 2011, and were down 1.1% from August.
