MEXICO CITY - It has been a spectacular year for sport but this is the big one! Dozens of clowns competed in the tenth annual 'Payaso Olimpiada,' or 'Clown Olympics,' in Mexico City on Monday.

The tenth edition of the prestigious competition was held in Mexico City, which also played host to what some call the proper Games in 1986.

It takes years of training to be fit to compete in elite level human bowling, clown shoe relay and funny diving.

But for one clown olympian, the Games are about one thing and one thing only.

Surimi Solecito, Clown Olympian: "The greatest thing you can do is to make people smile. It's very beautiful."

There is a serious side to the Games - the clowns on show are collecting money for food donations for some of the poorest residents of Mexico City.

At the end of the festivities, organisers said they expected to have brought in enough funds to pay for around half a ton of food, so all the clowning around really was worth it.
