MEXICO CITY – The National Council of Social Development Policy Review (Coneval) said that the nation’s poverty reduction goals for 2012 were not met due to price increases in basic products in addition to inflation and wage stagnation.
Coneval President Gonzalo Hernández said that though social programs have mostly been successful, a greater level of transparency is required on federal funding that states received. He said that Peña Nieto’s proposals for changes in the Secretariat of Social Development (Sedesol) “weren’t too bad,” but that one of the new administration’s main challenges will be to improve consumers’ purchasing power, which would improve quality of life for the population.
Gonzalo Hernández stressed the importance of improving the quality of education, health services and the Food Support program, and bringing together vulnerable social groups such as young people, women, indigenous peoples and senior citizens.
