MEXICO CITY - The head of the organized-crime division of the Mexican Attorney General's Office is stepping down for personal reasons.

Jose Cuitlahuac Salinas has been in the post since November 2011.

In his letter of resignation, he thanked President Felipe Calderon and Attorney General Marisela Morales for giving him "the opportunity of having contributed" in such an important position, the AG's office said in a statement.

Salinas resigned for "reasons of a strictly personal nature," according to the statement, which praised the departing prosecutor's performance of the "difficult tasks" assigned to him.

Rodrigo Archundia Barrientos will become acting chief of the organized-crime unit, which plays a key role in the Mexican government's battle with powerful drug cartels.
