MEXICO CITY — Outgoing Mexican President Felipe Calderon called his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama Wednesday to reaffirm the close ties between the two neighboring nations, which he hopes would continue under his successor.

With just 17 days left in office, “Calderon reiterated his conviction that the governments of both countries will continue to work to deepen their cooperation to improve the prosperity, security and competitiveness of Mexico and the United States,” the president’s office said.

Obama, in response, “expressed his commitment to continue working along those lines,” the office said, adding that the U.S. leader thanked Calderon’s for his efforts over the past four years in developing a solid bilateral relationship.

Calderon, who took office in 2006, is to conclude 12 years of governing by Mexico’s conservative National Action Party. His successor Enrique Pena Nieto of the Institutional Revolutionary Party will take power on Dec. 1.

Mexico’s president serves a six-year term and is barred by the constitution from running again.
