Mexico asked the United States to put an end to the fifty-year economic, commercial and financial blockade on Cuba, echoing the calls in this regard made by the international community.

Our closeness with Cuba, the Cuban people and our own convictions make us understand the urgent need to lift the US blockade, said Ambassador Luis Alfonso de Alba, Mexico's permanent representative to the UN.

His claim was made during the debate within the General Assembly as part of the analysis of the report titled "Necessity to End the US economic, commercial and financial blockade on Cuba."

"The Government of Mexico reaffirms its opposition to the US blockade on Cuba and its rejection of the use of coercive actions in violation of international law and of the UN Charter," said De Alba.

"We are certain that such measures cause serious humanitarian consequences in open contradiction with the objectives that allegedly inspire them," he added.

He said such regulations also mean giving up negotiation, diplomacy and dialogue, as the right means to solve controversies among states.

Meanwhile, permanent representative of Chile to the UN, Octavio Errazuriz, also criticized the unilateral siege of Cuba by the United States, which has meant to the Cuban people 1.06 trillion USD in damages.

Errazuriz said that the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) is in favour of the adoption of the resolution "Necessity to End the US economic, commercial and financial blockade on Cuba."

"We make emphasis on the inconsistency between the unilateral implementation of measures that are not backed by international law and the letter and spirit of the UN Charter," he said.

"We urge the United States to make adjustments needed to its laws so that Washington is in line with UN statutes, as well as with those of Latin America, the Caribbean and other regions worldwide," said Errazuriz.
