Local civil and religious groups delivered a petition signed by over 90,000 people to the State Congress of Zacatecas in Mexico, calling for a constitutional amendment to prevent the legalization of abortion.

Maria Guadalupe Escobar of the association Rights of the Unborn said the petition entitled, "The wonderful gift of life and its human dignity," is supported by 93,670 signatures from the 58 municipalities in the state.

"Thousands of Zacatecans expect a yes in support of the right to life from state lawmakers, like the yes citizens gave them on election day to represent us in the legislature," she said.

In response, the president of the Committee on Constitutional Questions of the Zacatecas State Congress, Maria de la Luz Dominguez, said the petition will be given due consideration.
