MEXICO CITY – Deputies from Mexico’s three major political parties agreed last week that Mexico City should become the 32nd Mexican state and have its own constitution. National Action Party (PAN), Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) politicians said that they would push to make Mexico’s capital a state within the year.
Mexico City Committee Secretary Paloma Villaseñor Vargas said that her party is open to reviewing proposals to give Mexico City autonomy.
“There are many things to review to try and reach a consensus over whether we are going to amend the federal Constitution, the statutes, whether it’s worthwhile to build a new constitution, whether to change the models (of government) that are here,” the PRI deputy said.
PAN deputy and Constitutional Issues Committee Secretary Fernando Rodríguez Saldoval said that his party was committed to making Mexico City the 32nd state, and that a bill to change Article 122 of the Mexican Constitution would be presented in a few days. “We are willing to jump on board with the different calls being made in order to get the best reform. We join the call made by Mayor-elect Mancera to discuss this possibility (of a Mexico City state),” he said.
Constitutional Issues Committee President Julio Moreno of the PRD highlighted the urgency of approving the modifications to the Constitution so that the city “is not a hybrid, because (now) it’s not a federal district and its not a state.”
Without the full powers of a state, he said, Mexico City does not have budgetary autonomy.
