MEXICO CITY - President Calderón issued a media statement to announce that in the month of October, 136,287 net formal new jobs were created in the country: net because dismissals and resignations are excluded; formal because this only includes the workers registered with the Social Security Institute; new because they join the country’s existing workforce.

The total number of net formal new jobs created  from January to October 2012 is over 865,000. This is the highest figure for job creation in a year registered at the Mexican Social Security Institute.
For the first time in the history of the country, the IMSS has exceeded 16 million affiliated workers.

The president declared that between January 2007 and October 2012, 2,493,000 new jobs have been created, meaning that this is the period with the second largest job creation since this indicator has been measured.

“This progress is positive, particularly if we bear in mind the difficult context in which this has taken place, such as the severe world economic crisis, which continues to wreak havoc in many economies,” declared the president.

Countries such as Spain and Greece have a much higher unemployment rate than Mexico. Whereas unemployment in Mexico is under five per cent, in Spain it is over 20 per cent.

Before concluding his address, the president called for a continuation of the underlying changes needed by the country to continue creating the jobs Mexicans deserve and highlighted the importance of the passage of the Labor Reform. This is a key reform for the development of the country, since it particularly encourages job creation for youth, women and those who do not currently have jobs.
