MEXICO CITY – Mexico’s President Felipe Calderón said this week that despite the electoral controversy that clouded the start of his presidency six years ago, he has finally achieved legitimacy in the eyes of his country’s citizens after his many accomplishments.
“It’s true that there were people who were not only betting on it, but worked hard to prevent me from finishing my term as president of the republic, there were those that worked very hard to keep it from happening, and now here we are with established legitimacy and a job well done,” he said.
Calderón spoke at the Radio and Television Lunch in honor of the 54th National Radio and Television week. He said that although Mexico has been called a failed state, “ Today it is a democratic nation with a clear division of power, universal health care, 35 million children and young people, international environmental leadership and a liberal, democratic economy.” He thanked the telecommunications sector for its support during his term and said that it “acted correctly according to the circumstances.”
“Today’s Mexico is a different place, we surely could have done many things differently; no one is exempt, not even from their own limitations, but I worked to assure that this generation acted appropriately and today Mexico has the fundamentals needed for a better and distinctive (future).”
