MEXICO CITY - Mexican President Felipe Calderon and the man who will succeed him in a few weeks, Enrique Peña Nieto, on Wednesday congratulated Barack Obama on winning a second term as U.S. head of state and expressed confidence that the links between the two countries will continue to broaden and deepen.

Calderon's office said he sent a letter to Obama offering congratulations and emphasizing "the importance for the Mexican and U.S. societies of consolidating shared responsibility as a basis for bilateral cooperation."

Mexican President-elect Enrique Peña Nieto, on the other hand, congratulated Obama via Twitter.

"It will give me great pleasure to personally congratulate him on my next visit to the United States and to work together for the benefit of our nations," said the winner of Mexico's July election.

Calderon, who will hand over power to Peña Nieto on Dec. 1, said he was confident that the two governments "will continue broadening and deepening cooperation" and their efforts in favor of "the prosperity, security and competitiveness" of the two countries.
