MEXICO CITY – President-elect Enrique Peña Nieto has denied that the creation of a Universal Social Security System, which he will press for during his administration, will mean an end to the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) and pledged to support existing social programs.
“The IMSS will have the same role it does now; it will form a part of the institutions that will allow for the consolidation of the Universal Social Security System. The savings and provisions of its beneficiaries are secure,” he said in response to inquiries from the public.
On his website, www.enriquepenanieto.com, he reaffirmed that the Opportunities and Popular Insurance (SP) programs will not only continue, but expand and compliment other programs, such as the Zero Hunger Brigades, which combat food insecurity in the most marginalized areas of the country. In the questions area, a citizen asked Peña Nieto about his economic plan for the next six years.
The incoming president said that he will maintain the country’s current macroeconomic stability and will work to ensure economic growth. Peña Nieto believes his proposed structural reforms will create new employment and education opportunities.
