MEXICO CITY – Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) Senate Coordinator Emilio Gamboa Patrón said last week that the legislative front against his party made up of National Action Party (PAN), Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) and Citizens Movement (MC) deputies in the lower house will not last long.

The PRI senator and Political Organization Board (Jucopo) president said that the forming of the bloc was unnecessary.

“The (legislative front) against the PRI will not last long because it doesn’t exist. The PRI isn’t against the PAN, the PRD, the Labor Party (PT), the New Alliance Party (Panal), against any party, nor are the other parties against the PRI. They are just (divergent) points of view on the (labor) bill and they must be discussed and voted on by the labor committee in the Chamber of Deputies and then (the bill) will move on to the lower house.”

The contested labor reform bill has pushed the conservative PAN to link up with leftist parties in Congress and vote against the PRI on key union democracy and transparency issues, although even these parties deny the existence of an “anti-PRI” front.

Both PRD Senate Coordinator Miguel Barbosa Huerta and PAN Senate Coordinator Ernesto Cordero Arroyo said that the front was not created in opposition to any particular party.

Barbosa Huerta said, “It is a (circumstantial) legislative bloc to deal with (the labor reform). Afterwards we’ll see a PRI and PAN alliance on other issues.”

Ernesto Cordero said that the front is only focusing on moving bills through Congress.
