Mexico noted with satisfaction this weeek the sentencing of a former U.S. Border Patrol agent to eight years in prison for sexually assaulting a Mexican woman in California.

"The government of Mexico has followed the case from the first moment and has provided the required support," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Luis Edward Hermosillo was sentenced in California's Riverside County Superior Court on Oct. 23, immediately after he pleaded guilty to the offenses of kidnapping and sexual penetration by threatening to use the authority of a public official.

Hermosillo was still a Border Patrol agent at the time of the 2009 incident in Indio, California.

He pulled over the Mexican woman - whose name was withheld - and her two young children, ordered the tourist to get out of the car and then groped and penetrated her with his finger.

The victim's civil suit seeking damages proceeds with the backing of the Mexican government, the foreign ministry said.

The ministry said it would continue working through Mexico's embassy and consulates in the United States to deliver "all the assistance and consular protection necessary" to ensure the rights of Mexican citizens are respected north of the border, regardless of their immigration status.
