DOUGLAS — More than 15 tons of items were collected during a 36-hour event in Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico, that benefits illegal immigrants who get deported to Mexico.

The Mexican Consulate in Douglas and the City of Agua Prieta in Mexico are inviting the community to donate items Friday and Saturday at the Plaza Plan for the Migration 2012.

Oscar Antonio de la Torre Amezcua, the Consul of Mexico in Douglas, said 15 1/2 tons of items were collected during the event. Over the past five years, more than 107 tons have been collected.

People were asked to donate clothes, water bottles, non-perishable food, personal care kits, medical supplies and non-expired over-the-counter medicines.
