More than 1,200,000 visitors attended the International Book Fair in the Zocalo, the main square in Mexico City, held on October 19-28, it was announced today.
The literary celebration this year, which included the participation of 225 publishing houses, was dedicated to late writer Carlos Fuentes and Guatemala, as a guest of honor.
A comprehensive program, including many cultural events, took place during the event.
The Fair's director, Maria Cortina, stated that more people attended this year's edition and more books were sold than during the previous one.
Cortina noted that the cultural events were about 70 percent full, showing that in addition to book purchases, there was high public attendance at other activities.
She highlighted among them the staging of Hamlet, the 3rd Spanish-American Colloquium on Cultural Journalism, workshops, children's activities, and a gift of 10,000 copies of the book "Cuentos sobre naturals," by Fuentes.
The program included an international gathering on poetry, lectures, book launchings, public readings, and musical and theater performances.
Renowned writers such as Elena Poniatowska, Xavier Velasco, Antonio Orejudo, Monica Lavin, Julio Solorzano, Ignacio Padilla, Alberto Chimal, Laura Martinez, Fernanda Tapia, Jorge Enrique Botero and Jose Reveles, among others, attended the Fair.
