MEXICO CITY - Mexico went off daylight saving time, or DST, over the weekend, with preliminary estimates putting total energy savings at 1,014 GW, a sum equivalent to the total energy consumption of Campeche state last year, the Energy Secretariat said.
DST ended early Sunday after being in effect in most of Mexico, with the exception of 33 cities near the U.S. border where the time will not change until the first Sunday in November.
Officials had reminded people for several days to remember to set their clocks back an hour before going to bed on Saturday night since DST would end at 2:00 a.m. Sunday.
Mexico achieved total energy savings of 1.27 billion pesos (about $97 million) and cut petroleum consumption by 1.8 million barrels, thanks to DST, the secretariat said.
The country also avoided emitting 677,000 tons of CO2, which is considered responsible for global warming, the Energy Secretariat said.
