MEXICO CITY – Thanks to the talent and skills of Mexican doctors, the country is now on the cutting edge of international medicine, said President Felipe Calderón while participating in the 2012 Doctors’ Day and Recognition of Medical Merit ceremony.

The event honored Doctor Silvestre Frenk Freund, who is considered to be a pioneer in the field of pediatric endocrinology. At the opening ceremony, Calderón said that universal health care for all Mexicans and improvements to the health sector in general have been one of the greatest successes of his six-year term.

He went on to say that the federal government has proven its commitment to “life,” and thanks to the efforts of the entire country, universal health-care coverage is now a reality. “Our commitment to health has been a job well done, a fight well fought ... So, I want to congratulate all Mexican medical professionals. A job well done by all Mexicans for the good of future generations.”

The president said that thanks to the efforts of doctors, epidemics such as the H1N1 virus were controlled, and that Mexico has “set an international example of transparency and responsibility.”

Calderón recognized that although the health sector in the country has further to go, accessible health-care services mark a “watershed” moment in the modern history of Mexican medicine.
