Dozens of huge, colorful sculptures have paraded through Mexico City Saturday for the annual Alebrijes celebration.
Emilio Ortiz Marin, of the Popular Art Museum, said the creatures originated "from the creativity and imagination of our artisans and each of these figures captures the bodies of different animals."
As well as celebrating Mexican folk culture, some of the sculptures paid tribute to the country's indigenous animals which are in danger of extinction.
"It's about bringing awareness to the people of the dangers and extinction of the animals, which are 100 per cent Mexican, such as the hummingbird, the turtle and the cochineal insect," said sculptor Emanuel Vazquez Hernandez.
