“Only 70 out of 100 rural women were enrolled in basic education schools, also 4 out of 10 get paid for their work in the fields,” explained the Federal Deputy, Narcedalia Ramírez Pineda during the lecture ”The participation of rural women in recent times” held at the State Congress building.
The federal deputy exemplified the degree of discrimination on which the rural women is living, according to data from the National Commission of Human Rights (CNDH), which indicates that 406 indigenous who are imprisoned, only 48 had an interpreter during their legal procedures or trails.
She stressed how important it is for society itself to give a true value to the rural women, in order to respect them and to give them the opportunities of development they deserve, starting with access to education.
The Federal Deputy noted that women are a key point in the economy of any country, but the authorities and the society still owe them so much in basic rights as health, human rights, and education, among other items. However, women have been organizing themselves and pushing governments to design more and better programs for that sector of the population.
On another hand, Elsy Cruz Sarabia president of the Gender Equality Commission, Human Rights and Vulnerable Groups of the LX Legislature, said that rural women have the right to not to be discriminated, to be free and not to be attacked by anyone. They also have the right to have their spaces to practice their traditions and to be respected, as well as to get support to teach them, practice and manifest their customs and ceremonies, they have the rights to receive the benefits of social programs provided by the State.
During the International Day of Rural Women commemorated on October 15, Narcedalia Ramírez said that these women are torn by health problems, malnutrition, lack of education, and marginalization besides the innumerable shortcomings that make life more difficult to keep moving forward in a world that has exceeded them regarding the advancements on technology, science and health.
“Yucatan has a highly marginalized population, there are places that seem to be a separate world, where electricity, health services, and education is a luxury and a lifestyle that corresponds to an alien world to them.”
“The Law for the Protection of the Indigenous People must be enforced, and the government institutions have to do their part in a effective way, in order to guarantee total respect of their way to live,” concluded the Deputy.
