MORELIA, Mexico - More than 20,000 teachers and students marched and blocked roads in western Mexico on Wednesday, demanding the release of 98 protesters detained during clashes with police this week.

The marches and road blockades will continue "until the release of all 98 young people who are still held," Mr Juan Jose Ortega Madrigal, a leader of the CNTE teachers' union, told AFP.

The union said teachers will also remain on strike in the state of Michoacan, one of the poorest regions of Mexico. Around 22,000 people took part in Wednesday's march, according to state authorities.

The protesters were arrested on Monday when they battled 1,500 police officers who were deployed to remove them from three teacher colleges that had been occupied to denounce curriculum changes in Michoacan.
