Renowned innovators from around the world descended Thursday on Tijuana as the largest celebration of technology and culture of the year began.
Mexican President Felipe Calderón inaugurated Tijuana Innovadora, a conference that attracted nearly 700,000 people two years ago in its first edition.
The 11-day event at the Centro Cultural Tijuana showcases innovation in technology and culture on both sides of the border. In fact, San Diego plays a major role, as leaders there helped plan the conference and proposed luminaries from the region as speakers.
The first afternoon of the conference will feature speakers who will explore water management, including several from San Diego County.
On Friday, the themes will be education and cinematography, with several speakers coming from the entertainment capitals of Los Angeles and Mexico City.
Shuttle buses will provide round-trip transportation from downtown San Diego to the conference venue twice a day for a total of $15. The buses will depart from the Santa Fe train station at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., returning at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Reservations are encouraged and may be made through conference website, tijuana2012.com, where the latest event details can be found.
Featured event speakers include such luminaries as:
