Mexico's national water commission Conagua said water quality on the nation's coastlines has greatly improved during the nine-year course of a multi-institutional clean beach program.

Water quality at the 334 beaches monitored under the program now meets 90% of quality standards on average, Conagau said in a press release.

In the same announcement Conagua said it would push for international environmental certification of Mexico's beaches to promote the nation as a tourist destination.

In order to maintain and further improve water quality Conagua said the incoming government must create a system that monitors the quality of water leaving treatment facilities in real time.

The commission also urged increased government support of the nation's 38 clean beach committees.
