MEXICO CITY - Mexico's attorney general says a judge has ordered 12 police officers who fired on a U.S. Embassy vehicle, wounding two CIA officers, held for another 40 days under a form of house arrest pending possible charges.

Marisela Morales told reporters Wednesday that there have been "important advances" in the case but didn't offer any details.

The officers were detained shortly after the Aug. 24 attack near the resort city of Cuernavaca and ordered held for 40 days on suspicion of abusing their authority. That charge can involve criminal wrongdoing and extreme negligence.

U.S. and Mexican officials said Tuesday that there is strong circumstantial evidence that the federal police officers were working for organized crime and that the attack was a targeted assassination attempt.
