MANAGUA, Nicaragua - Nicaraguan prosecutors are asking Mexico to investigate whether vans used to smuggle $9.2 million in cash into Nicaragua really belonged to a Mexican television network.
Mexico's Televisa network says the alleged leader of a band of 18 Mexicans detained in Nicaragua registered the six vans illegally in the company's name using false documents.
But assistant Nicaraguan prosecutor Ana Julia Guido said Tuesday the case is still not clear, and asked Mexican authorities to investigate.
Televisa says the gang's leader didn't work for the company, and used an expired power-of-attorney document to register the vans, which bore the network's logo.
The 18 Mexicans entered Nicaragua posing as members of a Televisa news crew. They allegedly carried money from Mexican drug traffickers through Central America to pay for a drug shipment.
