Huatulco: Nine stunning bays to choose from

Huatulco’s full name is “Las Bahías de Huatulco” (The Bays of Huatulco). It is so named because of its nine bays and 36 beaches. They are:

Bahia Tangolunda
is the most highly developed in terms of tourism. It offers 5 beaches, some well-established resorts and a golf course nearby.

Bahia de Santa Cruz
isone of themost popular. It is home to a central plaza, flea market, craft shops, bars and restaurants, so it’s great place to pick up a few souvenirs. Expect lovely white-sand beaches and turquoise blue water. It’s also a popular docking spot for cruise ships.

Bahia de Conejos
is more tranquiland offers 3 great beaches. It’s perfect for surfing.

Bahia de Chahue
features a more sophisticated ambience with a marina and upscale restaurants.

Bahia de San Augustin’s
coral reef makes it a snorkeller’s paradise.

There are 4 other bays in Huatulco, but some are only accessible by boat while others are environmentally protected and will not be developed for tourism.

What to do in Huatulco?

Huatulco is perfect for nature and beach lovers. Here are a few of our top choices of things to see and do:

• There is no better way to explore Huatulco than by boat. You will be able to see some of the magnificent bays that are not accessible by land.

• Visit the town of la Crucecita. This small, friendly town offers an authentic local vibe as well as bars, restaurants, shops and a beautiful church. The town church’s cupola is adorned with an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. The largest in the world, it is 20 metres tall.

• Hagia Sofia is an agro-ecological development of over 130 hectares. Different from traditional tourist sites, this nature sanctuary boasts beautiful flowers, gardens, wildlife and a butterfly reserve. You can even take a dip in the “La Campana” waterfall. It offers fabulous photo opportunities, but be sure to bring insect repellent – it’s a very humid environment.

• A visit to Magic Falls involves a 2-hour bumpy ride, but at the end of your drive, you’ll be able to swim in crystal-clear waters and take magnificent pictures. Many people combine this visit with a tour of the coffee plantation.

• Golf lovers can play a challenging round of golf next to Bahia Tangolunda.
