In an interview with the Brazilian magazine Época, President-elect Enrique Peña Nieto said that Mexico is in a defining moment, which must be taken advantage of to transform the country into a leading global economy.
“Free trade, far from protectionism, is the avenue that we should take to make Latin America a major player in the global economy,” Enrique Peña Nieto said.
Peña Nieto will begin his tour of Latin America on Monday, Sept. 17. He will travel to Guatemala, Colombia, Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Peru.
The president-elect will use the trip to form a multilateral agenda on migration, security and economic development, strengthen regional relations and regain Mexico’s position as a world leader.
Regarding relations with Brazil, the president-elect said that the country is an “indispensable parter in Latin America.”
He said that he wants to strengthen ties with the nation because, despite the country’s “highs and lows,” both countries’ trading capacities offer “huge opportunities.”
Peña Nieto went on to say that Mexico’s location and natural resources, such as petroleum, are the country’s “... bastions that will cement its future.”
Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) Senate Coordinator Emilio Gamboa Patrón said that Peña Nieto’s trip to Latin America is key to strengthening ties with the region’s many countries.
Gamboa Patrón said that the president-elect’s willingness to engage in partnerships demonstrates his commitment to ensuring that Mexico is on the path to becoming an international economic leader.
“(Peña Nieto’s) initiative (to travel) is very opportune … strengthening relations with nations that we not only share a continent with geographically, but commercial trade, migration, social and economic situations as well as coordinated strategies in the fight against organized crime,” said Gamboa Patrón. He went on to say that the president-elect’s meetings with government heads marks the beginning of a process of renewing Mexico’s historic role as a promoter of mutual respect, economic collaboration and understanding.
“... PRI senators are very aware of the fact that in an ever-increasingly integrated international context, it is fundamental to maintain constant and healthy dialog with foreign countries in order to promote development in our own country, so that quality of life improves for Mexicans.”
Gamboa Patrón said that one of the president-elect’s objectives, which he established in his campaign, is to revitalize Mexico’s role in the international arena, adding that PRI senators are supporting him completely.
